The coating unit on a multi-wire paperboard machine consists of: a curved doctor blade on the first coater and a straight beveled coating blade (straight blade) on the second coater. This machine produces 4-ply bleached paperboard, with the top and bottom layers made of bleached chemical pulp and the two middle layers made of bleached thermomechanical pulp from wood chips. The blade geometry is shown in Figure 8.
The curved blade is 108 mm long and 0.38 mm (0.015 in) thick, while the straight blade is 100 mm long and 0.31 mm (0.012 in) thick . The blade spans the entire machine with a width of 5.13 m. The free overhang lengths of the curved and straight blades are 28 mm and 20 mm, respectively.
